The New Mexico Heart Institute Foundation, a nonprofit organization, was established in 1999 to help support educational and research initiatives of the New Mexico Heart Institute such as Project Heart Start . The programs are designed to enhance the cardiovascular health of people in New Mexico.

Project Heart Start is dedicated to saving the lives of victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest through education of all capable citizens to perform compression-only CPR and to encourage and facilitate the placement and proper utilization of automated external defibrillators (AED).
